How much does it cost to build the perfect attraction? The answer will surprise you.Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, the most expensive ride ever built, cost approximately700 million dollars. To put it in perspective: that's more than double what it cost to produceAvengers: Endgame(356M) orAvatar: The Way of Water(350M). A single attraction. More expensive than most Hollywood movies.
In this ranking you will see the most obscene expenses in the history of theme parks. From launching roller coasters to dark rides with technology that doesn't exist anywhere else, these are the 10 attractions that have ever swallowed the most money.
If speed matters as much as budget, see our ranking of the fastest roller coasters in the world.
1. Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance — ~$700M 🇺🇸
Park:Disney's Hollywood Studios (Florida) and Disneyland (California)
Manufacturer:Walt Disney Imagineering
Type:Trackless dark ride + motion simulator + drop tower
Duration:18 minutes
Audio-Animatronics: 65
Opening:December 2019 (Florida), January 2020 (California)
The absolute masterpiece of Disney Imagineering. Rise of the Resistance is not an attraction: they arefour attractions in one. First you walk through a Resistance base. You are then put on a transport that is captured by the First Order. Then you get into a trackless vehicle that escapes through the corridors of a Star Destroyer. And in the middle is a hidden drop tower, immersive projections, 65 audio-animatronics and practical effects that change the size of the room.
The exact cost has never been officially confirmed, but industry estimates put it between$650 and $700 millionfor the Florida version. Disney built a nearly identical copy in California for about another $400M (saving R&D). This makes it, by a wide margin, the most expensive attraction of all time.
2. Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind — ~$500M 🇺🇸
Park:Epcot (Walt Disney World, Florida)
Manufacturer:Vekoma / Walt Disney Imagineering
Type:Steel enclosed spinning LSM coaster
Length:1,700 m
Speed:97 km/h
Duration: 3:20
Opening:May 27, 2022
The most expensive roller coaster ever built. Cosmic Rewind cost approximately500 million dollars, according to industry estimates. It replaced Ellen's Energy Adventure (a 1996 attraction that was so boring people fell asleep inside) and completely transformed Epcot's Energy Universe pavilion into the Wonders of Xandar.
Why so expensive? Because it's a coasterindoorwith trains thatrotate 360 degreeson its own axis, synchronized with the music (you change songs on each trip: "September", "One Way or Another", "Everybody Wants to Rule the World"...). The building that houses it is 19,000 m² – larger than three football fields – and houses one of the longest LSM launch systems in the world. The feeling of dancing inside a coaster at 97 km/h does not exist anywhere else.
3. Radiator Springs Racers — $200M+ 🇺🇸
Park:Disney California Adventure (Anaheim)
Manufacturer:Dynamic Attractions / Walt Disney Imagineering
Type:Slot car / dark ride
Duration: 4:22
Opening:June 15, 2012
The centerpiece of Cars Land, the best themed expansion Disney has ever made. Radiator Springs Racers combines an indoor dark ride with audio-animatronics of the Cars characters with an outdoor car race where two vehicles compete side by side at 64 km/h. costmore than 200 million dollars, making it one of the most expensive attractions in the world at the time.
The level of detail is absurd: the mountains in the background are shaped like Cadillacs, the cars have eyes that move, and the landscape exactly replicates that of the film. If you've seen Cars, being inside Radiator Springs is surreal. It was the first attraction to use third-generation "slot car" technology (evolution of Epcot's Test Track), where each vehicle has its own electric motor on board.
4. Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey — ~$200M 🇺🇸
Park:Universal Islands of Adventure (Florida)
Manufacturer:Universal Creative / KUKA
Type:Dark ride with robotic arm (RoboCoaster G2)
Duration: 5:00
Opening:June 18, 2010
The attraction that saved Universal. When it opened in 2010, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter was Universal's most ambitious project and Forbidden Journey was its jewel. Mounted inside a full-scale replica of Hogwarts Castle, it uses KUKA 6-degree-of-freedom robotic arms mounted on a trackless system that takes you flying through the world of Harry Potter.
The estimated cost of the attraction is$200 million, although part of that budget includes Hogwarts Castle itself and the surrounding Hogsmeade infrastructure. The RoboCoaster G2 technology—which moves passengers on a robotic arm while moving along a track—was so innovative that it patented a new type of ride system that has since been copied around the world.
5. Transformers: The Ride 3D — $100M per installation 🌍
Parks:Universal Studios Singapore, Hollywood, Florida and Beijing
Manufacturer:Universal Creative
Type:Motion-based 3D dark ride
Duration: 5:00
First opening:December 3, 2011 (Singapore)
Transformers The Ride 3D cost100 million dollarsfor each of its four facilities. Yes: Universal has spent more than$400 millionin total in this attraction throughout the world. It's Universal's most cloned ride, and for good reason: the combination of energetically moving vehicles with immersive 3D screens created a standard that defined an entire decade of dark rides.
The vehicle—a SCOOP mounted on a 6-degree-of-freedom Moog platform—moves along a physical course while 3D screens create the illusion that you're being launched across a city in the middle of a battle between Autobots and Decepticons. The integration between physical movement and projected images is so precise that your brain actually believes it is falling from a skyscraper.
6. The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man — ~$100M 🇺🇸
Park:Universal Islands of Adventure (Florida)
Manufacturer:Universal Creative / Moog Inc.
Type:Motion-based 3D dark ride
Duration: 5:00
Opening:May 28, 1999
The attraction that invented modern dark rides. Spider-Man opened in 1999 and for more than a decade was considered the best attraction on the planet. It cost approximately100 million dollars(a lot for 1999) and it was the first ride to combine physical movement, 3D and story 物理 in a coherent way.
The system—SCOOP vehicles mounted on Moog platforms that synchronize with projections—is the same one Transformers later perfected. But Spider-Man did it first, at a time when 3D in parks was practically non-existent. Each vehicle weighs 12 tons and can rotate, tilt and "fall" in sync with the screen. In 2012 it received a refurbishment with 4K projections that kept it competitive.
7. Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure — ~$300M 🇺🇸
Park:Universal Islands of Adventure (Florida)
Manufacturer:Universal Creative / Intamin
Type:Multi-launch story coaster
Length:1,500 m
Releases: 7
Duration: 3:25
Opening:June 13, 2019
The roller coaster with the most launches in the world (7 LSM launches in a single ride) and one of the most expensive ever built. It cost approximately300 million dollars, including extensive theming: castle ruins, fire effects, an animatronic dementor, and a dark section within the Forbidden Forest where the motorcycles "fall" in freefall.
Hagrid's showed that Universal can compete with Disney in theming at a level that seemed impossible for a roller coaster. The ride tells a complete story (Hagrid takes you to a class on caring for magical creatures) while launching you 7 times at different speeds. It is proof that coasters can have a narrative without sacrificing adrenaline.
8. Flight of Passage (Pandora) — ~$200M 🇺🇸
Park:Disney's Animal Kingdom (Walt Disney World)
Manufacturer:Walt Disney Imagineering / Simex-Iwerks
Type:3D flying theater simulator
Duration: 4:30
Opening:May 27, 2017
The most advanced flight simulator in the world. Flight of Passage makes you feel like you're flying over Pandora on a banshee, with a 90-meter-wide immersive screen that completely envelops your field of vision. The technology combines the screen with moving assistants, wind, fog and smells. It cost approximately200 million dollars.
What makes it special is not the screen (which is huge) but the sensory integration: you feel the wind on your face when you "swoop", you smell the forest when you "fly over" the selta, and the banshee-bike breathes between your legs (the seat has a pneumatic mechanism that simulates the creature's breathing). It is one of the few attractions that provokes screams of joy and tears in adults.
9. Everest Expedition to the Yeti — ~$100M 🇺🇸
Park:Disney's Animal Kingdom (Walt Disney World)
Manufacturer:Vekoma / Walt Disney Imagineering
Type:Steel mountain coaster
Height:37m
Length:1,840 m
Duration: 2:50
Opening:April 22, 2006
Disney's most expensive roller coaster until Cosmic Rewind surpassed it. Expedition Everest cost100 million dollars, much of which went on the 37-meter man-made mountain—the “Forbidden Mountain”—that is visible from miles away. Inside is a 24-foot-tall animatronic Yeti that, when working, is the largest audio-animatronic ever built by Disney.
The problem: the Yeti broke shortly after opening (the structure that supports it cracked) and since then it has been operating in "B mode"—a strobe light that simulates movement. Disney has promised to fix it for years but the cost would be so high that they have dropped it. Even so, the coaster is one of the best in the world: with its reverse fall into the darkness and the encounter with the Yeti, it is a masterpiece.
10. Uncharted: The Riddle of Penitence — ~€30M 🇪🇸
Park:PortAventura World (Salou, Spain)
Manufacturer:Intamin
Type:Multi-launch dark ride coaster
Opening:May 17, 2023
Our Spanish representative. Uncharted cost approximately30 million euros, making it the most expensive attraction in PortAventura and one of the most expensive in Spain. It doesn't reach the figures of American Disney/Universal, but for a European park it is a serious budget.
It is a dark ride coaster with 5 LSM launches, projection effects, physical scenes themed to the Uncharted video game franchise, and an original orchestral soundtrack. It is clear that PortAventura wants to compete with the big players, and Uncharted is its calling card.
Comparative table: The 10 most expensive

Note: Costs are industry estimates. Disney and Universal never confirm official figures for individual attractions.
Why do they cost so much?
The cost of a modern attraction is broken down into four large blocks:
1. R&D and design (15-25%):Walt Disney Imagineering and Universal Creative have thousands of employees. They develop their own technology that often does not exist before the ride. Rise of the Resistance required inventing a trackless vehicle with hidden lifts. Guardians needed a coaster whose trains rotated 360°. That takes years of engineering.
2. Construction and materials (30-40%):Buildings the size of airplane hangars, 37-meter artificial mountains, miles of custom-fabricated steel track, redundant hydraulic, electrical and safety systems. Everything has to pass construction AND amusement park inspections.
3. Ride technology (25-35%):The vehicles, the engines, the launch systems (LSM, hydraulic, pneumatic), the 4K laser projectors, the audio-animatronics (a human-sized AA can cost $1M+), the timing software. A single ride can have 50+ computers coordinating everything in real time.
4. Theming and decoration (15-25%):Painting, sculptures, vegetation, lighting, original soundtrack (Rise of the Resistance has a score by John Williams), integrated merchandising, staff uniforms... Theming is what differentiates an amusement park ride from a Disney/Universal attraction.
The next mega-attraction: Universal UK (2031)
Universal is opening a resort inBedfordshire, United Kingdom, in 2031. At 476 acres, it will be larger than Disneyland Paris. The total investment of the project is estimated atmore than £10 billion. If each main attraction costs between $200-500M, we are talking about potentially 5-10 rides that would enter this top 10. And for Spain, it is a cheap flight away.
