The war between Disney and Universal has taken decades, but2026 is the year the balance has been balanced more than ever. With the opening of Epic Universe in May 2025, Universal has shown that it can create a park up to any Disney classic. And Disney's response has not been expected: new expansions in Orlando, Anaheim and Paris. This is the most complete comparison you will find, without favoritism and with real data. We will compare everything: parks, attractions, prices, PIs, hotels and what comes. In the end, you decide.
1. The global map: who has more parks?
Let's start with the cold numbers. Disney operates12 theme parks in 6 destinationsaround the world: Walt Disney World (4 parks), Disneyland Resort (2), Tokyo Disney Resort (2), Disneyland Paris (2), Hong Kong Disneyland (1) and Shanghai Disney Resort (1). It also has Disney Cruise Line and Adventures by Disney. It's a colossal operation.
Universal, for its part, has7 parks in 4 destinations: Universal Orlando Resort (4 parks including Epic Universe), Universal Hollywood Studios (1), Universal Japan Studios (1) and Universal Singapore Studios (1). It also has ongoing projects: Universal Kids Resort in Frisco, Texas, Universal United Kingdom Resort in Bedford, United Kingdom, and Universal Horror Unleashed in Las Vegas. Universal is growing fast.
What does this mean? Disney has more infrastructure, more history and more global presence. But Universal is expanding more aggressively right now. The opening of Epic Universe was the first major new park in Orlando in 25 years, and that changed the rules of the game.
2. Star Attractions: The Jewels of Each Crown
This is where the comparison gets interesting. Both have attractions that alone justify the journey. Let's put them face to face.
Disney's top
- Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance(Disney World / Disneyland): an 18-minute hybrid dark ride that combines trackless, simulator, drop and live actors. It's probably the most ambitious attraction ever built.
- Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind(Epcot): a launched coaster with 360 ° rotating vehicles and retro sound band. One of the best coasters in America.
- TRON Lightcycle/Run(Magic Kingdom): motorbike coaster with launch at 95 km / h under a spectacular futuristic tent at night.
- Radiator Springs Racers(DCA): Disney's best family attraction, with cars running through a landscape identical to the movie Cars.
- Avatar Flight of Passage(Animal Kingdom): flight simulator on Pandora that remains reference in visual immersion.
- Indiana Jones Adventure(Disneyland): a classic that is still better than 90% of what has been opened in the last 20 years.
The top of Universal
- Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey(Islands of Adventure / USJ): the dark ride that changed everything when it opened in 2010. Robotic arm + KUKA on a dark ride.
- Jurassic World VelociCoaster(Islands of Adventure): the best coaster in Universal and one of the best in Florida. 47m top hat, mosasaurus splash and brutal airtime.
- Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry(Epic Universe): the new dark ride star of 2026. Trackless with total immersion in the Ministry of Magic.
- Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment(Epic Universe): dark ride with the world's most advanced animatronics, designed by Universal Creative.
- Mario Kart: Bowser's Challenge(Epic Universe / USJ / Hollywood): augmented reality dark ride that puts you into a Mario Kart career.
- Revenge of the Mumbai(Universal Studios Florida / Hollywood): an indoor coaster with theming of terror that is still hilarious.
Verdict in attractions?Disney wins in dark rids and narrative. His attractions tell stories with a sophistication that Universal still doesn't match. ButUniversal wins in adrenaline and recent tip technology. VelociCoaster, Hagrid's Magic Creatures and the attractions of Epic Universe show that Universal is pushing the technical limits more than Disney right now.
3. Epic Universe vs. Disney's expansions: the battle of 2025-2026
This is the most relevant confrontation today. Universal openedEpic Universe on May 22, 2025, its first new park in Orlando since 1999 (Islands of Adventure). It is a 110 acre park with 5 worlds: Celestial Park, Dark Universe (classic monsters), How to Train Your Dragon, Super Nintendo World and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter - Ministry of Magic. The estimated investment exceeds$7 billionincluding hotels and infrastructure.
Disney's response is not a new park (they haven't opened one in Orlando since Animal Kingdom in 1998), butmassive expansions in existing parks:
- Cars land in Magic Kingdom(2027): a radiator Springs type expansion but new, with thematic Russian mountains and a family environment.
- Villains land in Magic Kingdom(announced): dedicated to Disney villains, something fans have been asking for decades.
- Tropical Americasin Disney's Animal Kingdom: replacing Dinoland U.S.A. with an area inspired by Encanto and Indiana Jones.
- Disneyland Paris: the Frozen area and the new attraction of World of Frozen gradually opening.
- Disneyland California: Avatar experience announced, expanding DCA with the world of Pandora.
The strategy is clearly different.Universal bet on complete new parksthat change the media conversation.Disney wager to expand parks that already work, adding value without the risk (and cost) of a new entire park. Both strategies make sense, but Universal's makes more immediate hype.
4. Prices: Who's gonna ruin your wallet more?
We're going to what really matters to most of us. A day of park in Orlando, for a family of 4, how much does it cost on each side?
| Concept | Disney World | Universal Orlando |
|---|---|---|
| Entry 1 day (low season) | $109-$159 | $119-$179 |
| Entry 1 day (high season) | $164-$189 | $149-$199 |
| Genie + / Express Pass | $25 - $40 / day | $60- $130 / day |
| Economic hotel (night) | $150-$300 | $100-$250 |
| Hotel deluxe (night) | $500-$1,200 | $350-$700 |
| Food (4 people / day) | $200-$350 | $180-$300 |
| Estimated total 4 days / 4 persons | $4,500-$8,000 | $3,500-$6,500 |
Disney isconsistently more expensive. Not only in tickets: hotels, food and extras (Genie +, Lightning Lane, parking) add up faster. Universal, especially with your hotel + entrance packages, offers better value for money. If you go on a limited budget, Universal gives you more park for less money.
That's right, Disney includes free transport between hotels and parks (buses, monorail, Skyliner), something Universal only offers between its hotels and parks with limited shuttle. Disney transport is a real logistics advantage.
5. The PIs: Marvel, Star Wars, Harry Potter, Nintendo
franchises are the main weapon of this war. Let's see who has what:
Disney controls:
Marvel (with restrictions), Star Wars, Pixar (Toy Story, Cars, Inside Out, etc.), Disney Animation (Frozen, Enchanto, Moana), Disney classics (Mickey, Princessas), Avatar, Indiana Jones (license), The Muppets, National Geographic and the entire 20th Century Fox catalogue after purchase.
Universal controls:
Harry Potter (exclusive license in parks on the east coast of the United States), Jurassic World / Jurassic Park, Nintendo (Super Mario, Donkey Kong, Pokémon developing), Fast & Furious, Despicable Me / Minions, DreamWorks (Shrek, Kung Fu Panda, Trolls), classic monsters (Dracula, Frankenstein, La Mumia) and SpongeBob.
The Marvel problem
This is one of the most interesting dramas in the sector. Disney bought Marvel in 2009 for $4 billion. But Universal had a contract signed years before he gave themthe exclusive rights of the Marvel characters in theme parks east of the Mississippi. That's why in Universal's Islands of Adventure there are The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man, Hulk and Doctor Doom, and Disney World cannot wear those characters with their name and classic suit (so in Disney there are only Guardians of the Galaxy and not Iron Man or Spider-Man in attractions).
It is rumored that Disney is negotiating to recover these rights, but until there is an official announcement, Universal has one of the most valuable PIs in the world "borrowed" in its parks.
6. Hotels and resorts: where you stay
Disney World hasestimated 30 hotelsbetween their own and associated, from Value Resorts (All-Star Movies, Pop Century) to Deluxe (Grand Floridian, Animal Kingdom Lodge, Polynesian). The variety of prices and themes is huge: you can sleep in a tree in the Wilderness Lodge or in front of Lake Bay Lake in the Contemporary Resort with the monorail passing through the inside.
Universal Orlando has11 hotelsincluding new ones built for Epic Universe. Hard Rock Hotel, Loews Portofino Bay (a recreation of Portofino, Italy, impressive) and Universal's Helios Grand Hotel, the hotel within Epic Universe with direct view of the Chronos Portal. The average price quality is better than Disney, and guests of Universal hotels haveEarly Park Admissionand Express Pass unlimited in certain hotels.
Verdict hotels:Disney wins in quantity, variety and theme. Universal wins in relation to quality - price and benefits included (Express Pass in hotel deluxe is a huge value).
7. Immersion and theming: the art of creating worlds
This is the field where subjectivity commands, but there are objective criteria. Disney invented the concept of modern theme park with Disneyland in 1955. His philosophy isWalt's original rule: you can't see the racks. The cast members never break the character, there is no garbage on the floor, the music sets each area and the transition between lands is invisible. It is a level of polishing that no park in the world consistently equates.
But Universal has dramatically closed the gap with Epic Universe.Dark UniverseIt is a Gothic people of the 19th century Europe with fog, sounds of monsters and an atmosphere so dense that it feels like entering a classic horror film. The Wizarding World - Ministry of Magicreproduces Harry Potter's Ministry of Magic with a fidelity that leaves it breathless. AndSuper Nintendo WorldIt's literally a real-life Mario video game, with Power-Up Bands, blocks you hit and coins you collect.
Divide:Disney continues to win in general and polished consistency. But Universal hasmore intense peak immersion momentsespecially in Epic Universe. The difference is that Disney is impeccable in 95% of the park; Universal is spectacular in 90% with some less careful transition.
8. For families with children: who's better?
If you travel with young children (0-7 years),Disney is the undisputed winner. Fantasyland in Magic Kingdom has the attractions that a 4-year-old boy will remember all his life: Peter Pan's Flight, Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, Dumbo, Under the Sea. The characters are in every corner. Everything is designed for a child's height. The service is impeccable with families.
For 8-12-year-olds, it's the same. Universal has attractions as Despicable Me Minion Mayhem, E.T. Adventure (the latest original attraction of Universal Studios Florida), the Seuss Landing area in Islands of Adventure and now How to Train Your Dragon in Epic Universe. But Disney has Toy Story Land, Cars, and all Pixar.
For adolescents and adults looking for adrenaline,Universal is the clear winner. VelociCoaster, Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit, The Hulk, Incredible Hulk Coaster and the 4 Epic Universe coasters (including Stardust Racers dual- tracked) leave Disney short in real Russian mountains. Disney's only serious coaster is Guardians of the Galaxy and TON.
9. Technology and innovation: who pushes the limits
Disney invented the modern animatronics (Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln, 1964), the ride trackless vehicles (Luigi's Rollickin 'Roadsters, Pooh's Hunny Hunt in Tokyo), and the latest-generation Audiovisual Animatronics (Shaman in Na'vi River Journey). Disney Research is still a leading laboratory in robotics.
Universal, for its part, has innovated inScreen-based dark rides(Spider- Man in 1999 was revolutionary),coaster hybrids(Hagrid's with 7 launches),augmented reality in dark rivers(Mario Kart), and now with Epic Universe, has introducedanimatronics that outnumber Disney. Monsters Unchained has Frankenstein figures with a range of facial movement so realistic that many visitors think they are actors.
In 2026,Universal is winning the technological career. Not because Disney does not innude, but because Universal is building with the latest available technology, while much of Disney's infrastructure is 30-50 years old. Disney has more heritage, but Universal has more state-of-the-art hardware.
10. The final verdict: who wins?
After comparing everything, this is what I think. There's no absolute winner becauseare designed for different experiences:
- The Parkland Voyage verdict
Choose Disney if:You travel with young children, it's your first time in a theme park, you want the "feeling Disney" you grew up watching in movies, you value the obsessive detail and you don't mind paying more for it. Disney is the classic experience that never lets down.
Choose Universal if:You're looking for real adrenaline, you're a Harry Potter / Nintendo / Jurassic fan, you want more park for less money, or you've already made Disney and you want something different. Epic Universe makes Universal a complete destination for itself.
The reality:If you have time and money, do both. Orlando is the only city in the world where you can be in8 first-level theme parks within 15 km. Disney World and Universal Orlando complement each other better than they compete.
Next: roadmap 2026-2028
The war does not end in 2026. Here's what's coming:
- Universal UK Resort (Bedford, England)- estimated 2030-2031. It will be the first Universal Park in Europe, directly competing with Disneyland Paris.
- Universal Kids Resort (Frisco, Texas)- smaller park for families with young children. It's gradually opening.
- Universal Horror Unleashed (Las Vegas)- permanent terror attraction in AREA15.
- Disney - Cars Land in Magic Kingdom (2027-2028)
- Disney - Villains Land in Magic Kingdom(2028-2029 estimated)
- Disney - Tropical Americas in Animal Kingdom (2027)
- Disney - Avatar in Disney California Adventure(announced)
- Disneyland Paris - World of Frozen(progressively opening 2026)
The future is simple:Universal will have more new parks. Disney will have more expansions in existing parks. The question is whether Disney will be encouraged to build a fifth park in Orlando (it has been rumored for years) or whether it will continue to expand the four it has. Meanwhile, Universal has the momentum of Epic Universe and three new projects under way.
Frequently asked questions
For a first visit,Disney Worldis the most complete experience. But if you only have 2-3 days and you're looking to maximize fun,Universal Orlando with Epic Universeoffers more intensity in less time. The ideal: 4 days in Disney + 2 days in Universal.
Yeah, absolutely. They're 20-30 minutes away by car. Many families have been in Orlando for 5-7 days. We recommend not to try more than one park per day to avoid being exhausted.
Epic UniverseIt's the most impressive park in Universal right now. Islands of Adventure remains spectacular (VelociCoaster, Hulk, Spider-Man, Harry Potter). Universal Studios Florida is more classic. If you can only choose one: Epic Universe.
It's not "better" or "worse" - it's different. Epic Universe has better technology, better coasters and a very high level immersion. Disney World has more history, more parks, more variety and a superior general polishing. For a family with little children, Disney. For adolescents and adults looking for adrenaline, Epic Universe.
UniversalNo doubt. VelociCoaster, Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit, The Hulk, Stardust Racers and Hagrid's are superior to any Disney lineup. Disney has Guardians of the Galaxy and TON as its best, but they don't compete with Universal's coasters.
Universal has bought land in Bedford (England) and confirmed the project. The realistic estimate of openness is2030-2031. It will be the first Universal Park in Europe and will compete directly with Disneyland Paris.
